Buduruwagala
Ancient Buddhist Rock Temple in Sri Lanka
Discover the Sacred Beauty of Buduruwagala
Buduruwagala is one of Sri Lanka’s most fascinating ancient Buddhist archaeological sites, located approximately 9 km south of Wellawaya in the Monaragala District. Known as “the rock with Buddha images,” Buduruwagala is famous for its magnificent rock carvings, peaceful natural surroundings, and deep spiritual significance. This hidden cultural treasure is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking history, heritage, and authentic Sri Lankan Buddhist sites.
Dating back to the 9th or 10th century during the late Anuradhapura Period, Buduruwagala is believed to have been an important center of Mahayana Buddhism in ancient Sri Lanka. The temple complex is best known for its seven massive statues carved directly into a towering rock face, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and artistic brilliance.
The central figure is a majestic standing Buddha statue measuring approximately 16 meters (51 feet), making it the tallest ancient standing Buddha statue in Sri Lanka. Surrounding the main statue are six smaller figures believed to represent Bodhisattvas and Buddhist deities, including the graceful figure of Avalokitesvara. These statues still preserve traces of ancient stucco and paint, suggesting they were once beautifully decorated in vibrant colors.
One of the most mysterious features of Buduruwagala is the flame-shaped carved niche near the Buddha statue’s foot, which continuously secretes an oily liquid similar to mustard oil. The source of this unusual phenomenon remains unknown, adding mystery and spiritual curiosity to the site.
