Buduruwagala
Ancient Buddhist Rock Temple in Sri Lanka

Buduruwagala is an ancient Buddhist rock temple located approximately 9 km south of Wellawaya in Sri Lanka’s Monaragala District. The name “Buduruwagala” translates to “the rock with the Buddha images,” reflecting its significance as a site of Buddhist art and devotion. The temple complex features seven monumental statues carved into a sheer rock face, dating back to the 9th or 10th century. The central figure is a towering standing Buddha, approximately 16 meters (51 feet) tall, making it the tallest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka.. These statues are notable for their size, intricate carvings, and the traces of original stucco and paint that suggest they were once brightly adorned. A unique feature of the site is a carved flame-shaped niche near the Buddha’s foot, which remains perpetually moist with a substance resembling mustard oil, the origin of which remains unexplained.
