Dambulla
The Cultural Heart of Sri Lanka
Dambulla Cave temple ( golden rock temple)
The Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in central Sri Lanka near Sigiriya. Dating back to the 1st century BC. It was inaugurally established by King Valagamba, who converted the caves into a temple complex after regaining his throne in Anuradhapura. The complex consists of five main caves carved into a massive granite rock, housing over 150 Buddha statues and extensive murals covering about 2,000 square meters, depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha and Sri Lankan history. The most notable caves include the Maharaja Lena with statues of ancient kings and the Devaraja Lena featuring a 14-meter reclining Buddha. A large golden Buddha statue marks the modern temple at the base of the hill, symbolizing the site’s enduring spiritual and artistic significance. One could find the richest collection of lord Budha images in theses caves.
